For it to count you have to activate these abilities DURING a Symbiote Surge (after the yellow bar in top right is fully charged and you pressed + to activate it). If you use these abilities without enabling Symbiote Charge it won’t count. 4 of them are automatically unlocked from story progress (unmissable) and 2 are bought from Peter’s skill tree. The game requires at least a GTX 1650 or Radeon RX 5500 XT to run properly at minimum settings. For a smoother and more visually immersive experience, an RTX 3060 or Radeon RX 5700 is recommended. That being said, I can’t help but have hoped for a few more flashes of Gotham City to make their way into New York. The main story took me around 18 hours to complete before I hit 100%, and the subsequent platinum trophy popped up to congratulate my efforts after 27 in total. Despite whatever loftier ambitions the story may have, this is still unapologetically an old-school approach to open-world game design, and nowhere is this displayed more clearly than in its optional quests.

Of course, if you’re going to be catching your ray-traced, 4K reflection (if you opt for the 30fps fidelity mode) in that glass so often, you’ll want to look your best.
These characters do add a bit more flavour to the world and its largely homogenous population of NPCs you’re clearly not intended to look at too closely. Speaking of boss battles, that’s one area that takes a noticeable step up from our initial tangos with Kingpin, Vulture, and the rest. One of my criticisms of the first in Insomniac’s series was how uninspired many of the showdowns felt, with their quicktime-heavy fights making a light impact. Improvements were made in Miles Morales, but here in the full-fledged sequel, boss battles really come to life. You’re made to wait a little too long for them sometimes, but when they do arrive they never fail to excite.

Enemies like Kraven the Hunter’s allies use techniques, counters and equipment to stalk Spider-Man like prey, forcing you to change up your tactics. Now you can build up height and speed with web-swinging before quickly switching to Web Wings to glide in areas like Queens, where there are few tall buildings. With the new interactive elements like super slingshots and wind tunnels that act as jet streams, Spider-Man has never been faster in the air.
