This hulking, powerful beast has arrived in Marvel’s New York like a twisted natural disaster. She isn’t just a reporter for the Bugle, she’s also an integral member of the Spider-team, showing that heroes don’t need superhuman abilities. The incredible power of the symbiote forces Peter and Miles to face the ultimate test of strength, both inside and outside the mask, as they balance their lives, friendships and their duty to protect those in need. Miles fights for his life in Kraven’s arena against his worst enemy, as Peter works to track down and free Miles himself. Peter tracks the Lizard through the sewers of New York, fights the monstrous beast, and learns of the true nature of his new Black Suit.

The DLC also brings back multiple characters from the base game like Yuri Watanabe, Silver Sablinova and Screwball, just to name a few. Marvel’s Spider-Man shows a more experienced Peter Parker than we usually see, as he’s been Spider-Man for around 8 years already at this point. Still, while he may have mastered his fighting skills, Peter still struggles to balance his personal life and his life as a crime-fighter. Insomniac Games has crafted something to take advantage of the mighty capabilities of PS5.
The rhythm of precision dodges, the new perfect parries (so you’re not only swerving and striking now), and acrobatic finishers are hugely satisfying, as is chasing high-hit combos to keep the fight as stylish as possible. The movement is smooth and the hits are crunching, like some sort of peanut butter hybrid that every one of your foes is allergic to. Every bone in their body may be broken and every organ punctured, but of course, they’ll somehow live to commit crimes again.
Thankfully, the team at Insomniac seem to have realized this, creating very few scenarios where the stealth is forced outside of mini-game sequences and, of course, Mary Jane. Since the dawn of Atari, there have been dozens of Spider-Man games, and despite the occasional gem, most developers have struggled to embody what makes the wall crawler work. It isn’t about power fantasy or the rogue’s gallery, it’s about the little things.
These characters do add a bit more flavour to the world and its largely homogenous population of NPCs you’re clearly not intended to look at too closely. Speaking of boss battles, that’s one area that takes a noticeable step up from our initial tangos with Kingpin, Vulture, and the rest. One of my criticisms of the first in Insomniac’s series was how uninspired many of the showdowns felt, with their quicktime-heavy fights making a light impact.
Even while foiling Kraven’s plans, Peter and Miles try to help their former adversaries find redemption. Like many of the game’s quests, the central premise transforms what you’d think superhero work typically looks like. After saving stolen artifacts for the museum, Miles remembers his departed father through his connection to jazz. “My dad really loved Charlie Parker… I guess I need to start listening closer to my playlist now,” he muses. These reflective moments deepen not only the game’s stand-out side content, but also its larger plot.

Marvel’s Spider-man Timeline Explained
The good news is Spider-Man 2 autosaves constantly so while the crashes are frustrating, players can usually start right where they left off after booting the game up again. This refreshes the gameplay nicely, as both Spiders can be seen not as superheroes and mighty fighters, but as ordinary citizens performing mundane tasks. And to observe their emotions on their faces and expressions in dialogues, usually hidden behind a mask. Mary Jane’s story is also part of the campaign, and the player will complete a couple of missions as her. The game tells a new story of two Spider-Men, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, who are both main characters, having both a shared storyline and a personal, completely independent one. Among the supervillains are Lizard, Mysterio, Sandman, Mr. Negative, Chameleon, and others.
The likes of an RTX 3060 for 60fps/1080p are quite reasonable as well, though you’re staring down the barrel of Nvidia’s pricey RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 cards for high-rez ray tracing. Unfortunately, Kraven’s goons kidnap him, leading to an action-packed car chase across the Big Apple. He turns into a giant Sandman and embarks on a rampage through New York. However, as Miles and Peter try to stop him, they realize he’s running from something — this ominous opening hints at the more sinister villains the duo of Spider-Men will encounter as the game’s story unfolds. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 initially hid the sheer volume of villains in the game. SC88 seemed like it’d be just Kraven and his troops hunting Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
To their credit, the way you can highlight side objectives by pressing the right stick is a welcome upgrade over mere icons on a map. Even without that, you can spot ominous clouds or glowing purple rooftops with the bare eye signaling activities are there to be found. This isn’t a world that beckons exploration or discovery, necessarily, but it is a step in the right direction toward creating greater immersion and mercifully less time spent looking at the map screen. Where the first game starred Peter Parker, and its spin-off starred Miles, this one has both.
They’re just as enjoyable, as it feels like the suit is trying to burst out of the rumbling DualSense controller in my hands. This aggressive style of play is rewarded, as the only way to heal is by building up your focus bar – filled by landing hits and timing perfect dodges – and is another way to make sure that exciting rhythm of combat is never lost. It’s enough of a roller coaster to hold your interest, and the way the city physically changes and evolves to fit the ongoing narrative is impressive (from ‘post-Sandman attack’ to ‘overrun with big game hunters’ and beyond). But from a project this obviously big and expensive, it all feels disappointingly undercooked. With thrilling action gameplay and a deep story, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 capitalizes on the heights of its predecessors and somehow makes New York big enough for the two web-slingers who inhabit it. What’s more, it transforms villains from dated tropes to complex characters, and humanizes the people we save, and the ones who save us, in unforgettable ways.
It’s hard not to feel, though, that Peter’s inability to hold down a job or progress his relationship with MJ feels a little higher stakes than Miles… procrastinating over his college application? Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, created by Insomniac Games and PlayStation in collaboration with Marvel Games, is a technological and graphical showcase utilizing tools like ray-tracing to bring the city of Marvel’s New York to life. On PC, you’ll encounter a variety of new ray-tracing options with individual quality settings to finetune performance and fidelity across a broad range of hardware configurations.

After Peter purged the symbiote from his body and it bonded to Eddie, Venom possessed all of Spider-Man’s abilities, but with greater physical capacity. To make him even more deadly, Eddie became aware of Peter’s secret identity from the symbiote’s time bonded to Spider-Man, and he gained the ability to nullify Spider-Man’s heightened senses.
